Doha’s selection as the host for the Mobile World Congress (MWC) in 2025 marks a significant milestone for the global communications sector and underscores Qatar’s advanced technological standing, according to Jawad Abbasi, Head of Middle East and North Africa at the GSMA. Speaking ahead of the conference, scheduled for 25-26 November, Abbasi described the MWC as the world’s leading platform for the entire communications ecosystem, connecting the private sector with governments and international institutions to support the digital economy.
Why Doha Was Chosen for MWC25
Abbasi explained that Doha was selected over several other major global cities based on a number of strategic factors. Chief among them is Qatar’s leadership in adopting advanced technologies, including 5G and fibre-optic networks. The country’s exceptionally high access rates to these services, with local operators using state-of-the-art digital systems, places it at the forefront of regional innovation. This technical prowess is a key reason why Qatar rises to #2 in global mobile speed.
Furthermore, Qatar’s highly developed infrastructure makes it an ideal destination for major international events. Abbasi highlighted the country’s transport sector, including Hamad International Airport, an integrated metro network, and world-class conference facilities, as critical assets. Combined with the global connectivity provided by Qatar Airways, these elements create a seamless experience for attendees. Abbasi confirmed that the GSMA intends for MWC to continue being held in Doha for years to come.
A Strategic Hub for Global Technology
The decision to host MWC in the region reflects a broader global economic shift, with the centre of gravity increasingly moving eastward. Abbasi noted that this trend gives the Gulf region a unique advantage. Doha, in particular, is accessible to between four and five billion people within a five-hour flight radius, positioning it as an ideal global hub for major gatherings like the upcoming Global Investors Forum 2025. This dynamic solidifies Qatar’s role as a key centre for the digital economy and global technology conferences.
Conference Agenda and Key Themes
MWC25 Doha is set to feature a diverse programme, including a high-level ministerial agenda for governments, policymakers, and international organisations. Discussions will focus on creating optimal regulatory frameworks to encourage sustainable investment in telecommunications networks.
The conference will explore several key themes, including artificial intelligence, the industrial application of 5G in sectors like transport and aviation, and the future of 6G technologies. With around 300 exhibiting companies from around the world, the event will serve as a platform for exchanging expertise and showcasing new innovations. During the conference, a strategic agreement will be signed between Qatar’s Ministry of Communications and Information Technology and the GSMA to establish a modern technology training centre, aiming to build digital capacity across the Arab world.
Looking further ahead, Abbasi stated that 6G technology is still in the research and development phase and is not expected to be publicly available until 2031 or 2032. He stressed that the immediate priority for the industry is to maximise the economic and social benefits of existing 5G networks. The GSMA is confident that MWC25 Doha will be a valuable addition to its series of global conferences, cementing the Arab region’s role as a central player in technology and innovation.
