A new passenger-only ferry service has been launched between Qatar and Bahrain, establishing a direct sea route designed to improve regional mobility and strengthen ties within the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC). The service connects Al-Ruwais Port in northern Qatar with Sa’ada Marina in Bahrain, creating a convenient travel option for citizens of GCC member countries.
Route Details and Service Schedule
The sea route covers a distance of approximately 35 nautical miles, or 65 kilometres, with a crossing time of 70 to 80 minutes. Initially, the service is available exclusively to GCC citizens and will operate two daily round trips from 7 to 12 November. The frequency will increase to three daily round trips from 13 to 22 November, with the potential for further adjustments based on passenger demand.
Passengers can book their journey through the MASAR app and choose between two types of vessels. A standard vessel accommodates 28 travellers, while a VIP option is available for 32 passengers, both equipped with modern onboard services. The new service from Al-Ruwais Port adds to Qatar’s growing maritime activities, which also include events like the upcoming Qatar Boat Show 2025.
A Strategic Step for Regional Integration
Qatar’s Minister of Transport, Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulla bin Mohammed Al Thani, called the initiative “a groundbreaking strategic step that reflects the depth of the brotherly bonds between the two countries”. He added that the service enhances cooperation and integration among GCC nations.
The minister also highlighted the project’s broader ambitions, stating it signals Qatar’s intent to build strategic partnerships with Bahrain and advance transport and logistical services. This effort aims to serve shared interests and bolster economic cohesion within the GCC, complementing other regional initiatives to boost Gulf tourism and connectivity.
Ensuring a Safe and Secure Journey
The launch is a collaborative effort between Qatar’s Ministry of Transport and Bahrain’s Ministry of Transportation and Telecommunications. Both authorities have worked to implement the highest standards of safety, security, and operational quality to ensure a reliable travel experience. All passengers are required to comply with the customs and security formalities mandated by both countries before and after their journey.
This new ferry service represents a significant development in regional transport infrastructure. By simplifying cross-border travel, it not only facilitates closer social and economic ties between Qatar and Bahrain but also supports the wider GCC vision of a more integrated and connected region.
