As India’s festive season approaches, a growing number of travellers are choosing international solo trips over traditional hometown visits, with the United Arab Emirates emerging as their primary destination. Data for September and October 2025 shows a surge in visa applications from Indian tourists, placing the UAE ahead of other popular spots like Thailand and Germany.

The trend marks a significant departure from the family-focused norm of festive travel in India. According to visa platform Atlys, over 71% of visa applications for the festive period came from solo travellers. This new wave is led by younger generations prioritising adventure and cultural exploration. Millennials account for 53.5% of solo applicants, followed by Gen Z at 29.7%.

“Festive travel in India has traditionally centred on family, but this year we’re witnessing a shift,” said Mohak Nahta, Founder and CEO of Atlys. “Many travellers are using long weekends to explore new destinations, turning holidays into opportunities for adventure and cultural discovery.”

The UAE’s Appeal

The UAE’s popularity among Indian solo travellers is driven by its close proximity, straightforward visa process, and frequent flights from major Indian cities. Booking.com data reveals Dubai is the top choice, with nearly 10 million visitors arriving between January and June 2025. Over 10% of these visitors were from India.

Beyond its iconic skyline, the country offers a diverse range of attractions. Dubai is a shopper’s paradise where vast luxury malls coexist with traditional souks selling gold, spices, and textiles. The region also provides a rich mix of cultural festivals and adventure activities that appeal to independent explorers.

Safety is another major factor contributing to the UAE’s appeal. Abu Dhabi, Dubai, and Sharjah are all ranked among the world’s 10 safest cities, with Abu Dhabi holding the top spot for nearly a decade. The UAE itself is rated the second safest country globally. This reputation for security provides significant peace of mind for those travelling alone.

While Asian destinations like Thailand, Vietnam, and Malaysia remain popular, Europe is also gaining traction. Germany has become the most sought-after Schengen destination for Indian travellers this year, attracting those keen to experience its historic cities and festivals. This reflects a broader trend of Indian tourists seeking immersive, hands-on cultural experiences over conventional sightseeing.
