Several member states of the UN Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation (UNESCO) Executive Board have lauded Qatar’s ongoing role in fostering peace in the region. This recognition came during the closing session of UNESCO’s 222nd Executive Board meeting, where representatives from nations such as Turkey, the United Kingdom, South Africa, and Oman praised Qatar’s collaboration with Egypt, Turkey, and the United States on peace-building efforts related to the Gaza Strip.

Qatar’s Advocacy for Education as a Pillar of Peace

In his address during the session, Qatar’s Permanent Representative to UNESCO, HE Dr Nasser bin Hamad al-Hanzab, stressed that education is a shared responsibility among the international community and serves as a fundamental pillar for stability and peace in Gaza. Dr al-Hanzab underlined UNESCO’s critical role in advancing educational initiatives as part of the broader peace efforts in the region.

Committee on Conventions and Recommendations

In a related development, the Committee on Conventions and Recommendations, chaired by Dr al-Hanzab, held two public sessions to assess the implementation of UNESCO’s legal and regulatory instruments. The committee reviewed mechanisms for enforcing and monitoring these conventions and recommendations among member states. Dr al-Hanzab presented a comprehensive report to the Executive Board on these matters, ensuring the full implementation of UNESCO-related agreements.

The committee also tackled various human rights issues within UNESCO’s mandate, exploring ways to further strengthen international human rights protections. This discussion aligns with the Executive Board’s resolutions and UNESCO’s legal instruments aimed at safeguarding human rights globally.

A Collaborative Effort for Regional Stability

Qatar’s contribution to peace-building initiatives, particularly in the Gaza Strip, has been a significant focus of international discussions. The recognition from UNESCO’s Executive Board highlights the importance of diplomatic cooperation in addressing regional challenges. As Qatar continues to engage with global and regional stakeholders, its commitment to education and human rights remains at the forefront of its diplomatic efforts.

Qatar’s leadership in these areas aligns with broader regional efforts, as emphasised in previous statements on the importance of the Gulf’s role in regional stability. As nations across the globe face pressing humanitarian and geopolitical challenges, Qatar’s strategic approach to diplomacy and peacebuilding continues to gain recognition and support.

This ongoing focus on peace, education, and human rights forms the foundation of Qatar’s international engagement, offering a path forward for stability in the region.
