Dubai Police has launched the Intelligent Traffic System (ITS), a groundbreaking solution aimed at improving road safety across the emirate. Revealed at GITEX Global 2025, this fully autonomous system leverages artificial intelligence and live video feeds to monitor and identify key traffic violations in real-time. By recording infractions with remarkable speed and precision, the ITS supports Dubai’s goal of becoming a smarter, safer city with a more efficient road network.

Revolutionising Traffic Enforcement

Lieutenant Engineer Ahmad Al Hammadi highlighted that the ITS marks a significant leap in operational efficiency. The system automates several tasks that were previously handled manually, freeing up police personnel to focus on more strategic responsibilities. This shift not only optimises resources but also improves decision-making, ultimately enhancing traffic safety across the city. As Al Hammadi put it, the ITS is “smarter, fairer, and more efficient,” and is poised to play a crucial role in reducing road accidents and enhancing public safety.

Key Violations Targeted

The system focuses on five critical behaviours that compromise road safety:

  • Not wearing a seatbelt
  • Using a mobile phone while driving
  • Causing unnecessary traffic obstruction
  • Stopping inappropriately or without valid reason in the middle of the road
  • Tailgating (failing to maintain a safe distance between vehicles)

These offences are monitored by the ITS, which provides authorities with real-time data on traffic compliance, helping to quickly identify areas that require attention.

Data-Driven Insights for Better Planning

In addition to enforcing traffic laws, the ITS also collects detailed statistical data on vehicle movement. It tracks traffic patterns on an hourly, daily, and yearly basis, offering valuable insights that can inform traffic planning and improve emergency response times. This data-driven approach will be instrumental in refining traffic management strategies and ensuring the ongoing safety of Dubai’s roads.

The new system is part of Dubai’s broader initiative to embrace smart technologies, which also includes collaborations like Dubai Police and DOF’s partnership to boost digital payments. By integrating these advanced tools, the city aims to streamline operations and create a more sustainable, efficient environment for its residents and visitors alike.

As Dubai continues to expand its tech-driven infrastructure, the ITS stands as a prime example of how innovation can play a vital role in enhancing public safety and urban mobility.
