Dubai Municipality has issued a new manual detailing strict health and safety requirements for laundries across the emirate, introducing 13 specific conditions that govern the use of consumer cleaning products.
The new guideline is part of the municipality’s integrated approach to maintaining a safe urban environment, which includes public health, safety, indoor air and water quality, and consumer product safety. It aligns with the city’s mission to sustain a world-class environment that supports the wellbeing of its residents and advances Dubai’s strategic vision.
Officials stated the manual was designed to strengthen adherence to approved health and safety regulations within laundries. The move aims to ensure a safe working environment for staff while raising awareness of environmental health risks.
New Mandates for Product Handling
The requirements in the manual cover the proper handling, storage, and use of detergents, disinfectants, and other chemicals. According to the new rules, all cleaning products must be approved by the relevant authorities, and items with misleading or inappropriate labelling are strictly prohibited.
Only trained personnel are permitted to handle the dilution and refilling of chemical products. Staff must receive suitable training on operating automatic pumps and mixing cleaning agents safely. The guidelines also strictly forbid mixing different types of detergents or disinfectants, particularly those containing reactive chemical components, to prevent hazardous reactions.
Furthermore, the rules stipulate that consumer product containers cannot be reused and must be disposed of safely. Each product must have a clear label indicating its opening date and details of any refilled contents. Products must not be left uncovered after use, and the use of expired, spoiled, or laboratory-rejected items is forbidden. All detergents and disinfectants must be stored in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight, in line with manufacturer instructions.
Upholding Public Health Standards
The municipality emphasised that the guide is part of its ongoing efforts to uphold the highest standards of health and safety. The initiative is intended to strengthen preventive practices and support a culture of compliance across the sector. This focus on public wellbeing is also reflected in other major city projects, including the Dubai Healthcare City Authority’s Dh1.3 billion expansion plan.
Key objectives of the new laundry manual include promoting compliance with health and environmental standards and enhancing public awareness about the importance of environmental health.
