Secretary General of the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC), Jasem Mohamed Albudaiwi, highlighted the GCC’s critical role in regional and global security, despite recent global and regional challenges. Speaking at a discussion session hosted by the Institute of Arab Gulf States in Washington, DC, on 15 October 2025, Albudaiwi affirmed that the GCC has become a key pillar of stability and a model of integration and cooperation among its member states.

GCC’s Achievements in Political and Economic Integration

Albudaiwi began his address by praising the Institute of Arab Gulf States for its contributions to enhancing global understanding of Gulf issues and supporting research on Gulf-related international relations. He went on to outline the GCC’s significant achievements across various sectors, particularly in politics, economics, and security.

He noted that the GCC member states have successfully unified their positions in international forums, bolstering strategic partnerships with various countries, as well as regional and global organisations. The Council has also strengthened its role in humanitarian and developmental initiatives at both regional and international levels.

Economically, the GCC has made considerable strides towards diversification, reducing its reliance on oil. Ambitious development strategies have been implemented, with investments in renewable energy, technology, tourism, and logistics playing a key role. Additionally, the activation of the Gulf Common Market has facilitated the movement of goods, capital, and individuals across the region, enhancing economic integration.

The GCC’s Vision for the Future

Looking ahead, Albudaiwi shared the GCC’s vision for the next decade. He outlined key priorities, including the completion of the Customs Union and Monetary Union, as well as advancing towards a unified Gulf economy. Another focus will be strengthening joint security and defense efforts, while the GCC also aims to lead in energy transition and sustainable development. Furthermore, empowering youth and women is seen as crucial to driving the future growth of the region.

Albudaiwi also emphasised the GCC’s steadfast support for the Palestinian cause, reaffirming the Council’s commitment to a just and comprehensive solution based on international legitimacy and the Arab Peace Initiative. This position remains central to the GCC’s foreign policy, particularly in light of ongoing regional tensions.

A New Era for the GCC

Concluding his remarks, Albudaiwi underscored that the GCC is entering a new era defined by further integration and global leadership. With a shared vision and political will, driven by the wise leadership of its member states, the GCC aims to realise the aspirations of its people for greater security, prosperity, and well-being.

As the GCC continues to strengthen its position on the global stage, the region’s forward-looking strategies in security, economy, and humanitarian efforts place it on a path towards even greater prominence in the years to come.
